Network coverage, region by region
Most “best eSIM” pages tell you Thailand has good coverage and stop there. Here is what actually works where, by region, sourced from carrier roaming agreements and updated when carriers change partners.
Bangkok Metro
Excellent

All carriers provide dense 4G and 5G across the city, the BTS Skytrain corridors and the inner suburbs. AIS and TrueMove H both deliver fast, consistent speeds throughout.

Chiang Mai and the North
Strong

Chiang Mai city has solid 4G from all operators. AIS is the clear choice if you leave the city, holding far stronger signal on the Mae Hong Son loop and other mountain roads where TrueMove H and dtac thin out.

Southern Islands (Phuket, Koh Samui, Koh Phangan)
Good

Tourist zones on all three islands are well served by 4G, with AIS performing most reliably in quieter bays and hillside areas. Expect signal to drop entirely on open-water ferry crossings between islands.

Northern Hill Country and Mae Hong Son
Variable

Coverage is reliable in larger towns but drops off sharply in mountain passes, forest valleys and areas near the Myanmar border. AIS is the only carrier with meaningful reach here, and even it has real gaps on remote stretches.

Isan (Northeast)
Good

Main provincial towns and highways are covered by all operators, but rural backroads and smaller villages rely on AIS, the most consistent carrier across the region. Expect patchy or no signal in the most isolated areas.

City-by-city connectivity in Thailand
Carrier coverage is the same nationwide story; the airport, the subway, and the free WiFi situation change city by city. Here is what travelers asking specifically about these cities actually need to know.

Bangkok

Arriving
Suvarnabhumi (BKK) and Don Mueang (DMK). The Airport Rail Link from BKK to Phaya Thai keeps cell signal throughout. Don Mueang is closer to the old city and served by airport bus services with continuous coverage.
On the subway and rail
BTS Skytrain and MRT Subway both have continuous cell signal on every line, including in the underground sections of the MRT Blue and Purple Lines. Tuk-tuks and Grab cars stay online everywhere. Chao Phraya River express boats hold a connection the length of the waterway.
Free public WiFi
TrueMove H and AIS both offer free public WiFi at shopping malls (Siam Paragon, Terminal 21, EmQuartier) and some BTS stations, but registration requires a Thai phone number which is awkward for tourists. Most cafes and 7-Elevens give the WiFi password with a purchase.
Coverage in the city
AIS, TrueMove H, and dtac all deliver dense 5G across central Bangkok including Sukhumvit, Silom, Siam, Asok, and Phrom Phong. The BTS and MRT corridors are consistently strong across all three carriers. Riverside neighborhoods (Charoennakorn, Khlong San) also covered well.
If you prefer a local SIM
AIS and TrueMove H counters at Suvarnabhumi arrivals (Level 2) sell tourist SIMs with 8-15 day plans for around $10. 7-Eleven and Family Mart citywide also sell prepaid SIMs. This is one of the friendliest places in Asia to buy a local SIM if you prefer.

Chiang Mai

Arriving
Chiang Mai International (CNX), 4 km from the old city. Walks, songthaews (shared red trucks), and Grab cars all reach the city in 10-15 minutes. The single terminal has steady reception from baggage claim to taxi rank. The airport is small enough that arrivals-to-SIM-counter usually takes under 5 minutes.
On the subway and rail
Chiang Mai has no metro or rapid transit. Songthaews (the iconic red trucks running fixed and flexible routes) and Grab/Bolt are the primary way to get around, and both carry full data wherever they run. Walking inside the moated old city is genuinely viable for most tourists.
Free public WiFi
Chiang Mai posts free WiFi at Tha Phae Gate, the major temples (Wat Phra Singh, Wat Chedi Luang), the Sunday Walking Street, and the Chiang Mai Gate Market. Cafes on Nimmanhaemin road and throughout the old city chalk their WiFi code next to the menu, often with the network speed listed beside it. The city is a digital-nomad hub partly because of this WiFi culture.
Coverage in the city
AIS, TrueMove H, and dtac all have strong 4G/5G across the old city (inside the moat), Nimman, and along the Ping River. AIS has the widest reach in the surrounding hills, including Doi Suthep and the Mae Rim area. Coverage drops noticeably in the deep valleys around Mae Sa Waterfall, on the way to Pai, and on mountain trails.
If you prefer a local SIM
AIS and TrueMove H counters at CNX arrivals sell tourist SIMs from around 300 baht for 15 days. 7-Eleven and Family Mart citywide also sell tourist SIMs. Chiang Mai is one of the easiest places in Asia to buy a local SIM if you prefer one over an eSIM.
Local Network Insights
Curated tips to help you stay connected in Thailand.

AIS, TrueMove H, and dtac keep Thailand connected with 5G in Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and Phuket. Islands and national parks lean on solid 4G but can fade indoors. Bringing an eSIM means you can summon rides and translate menus without visiting a street kiosk.

Connectivity Overview
What to expect for mobile connectivity in Thailand.

Thailand is one of Southeast Asia's best-connected destinations for eSIM travelers. AIS, TrueMove H, and dtac provide extensive 5G coverage in Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and Phuket, with 4G LTE blanketing popular tourist areas, beach destinations, and island hubs. Even smaller islands like Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, and Koh Lanta maintain reliable 4G.

Mobile data is essential for navigating Thailand - from booking Grab rides and ordering food on LINE MAN to using Google Maps for Bangkok's complex transit system. Pricing for Thai eSIM plans is among the lowest globally, making it affordable to stay well-connected throughout your trip.

Practical Data Tips
  • Grab is the essential ride-hailing app - reliable data is a must in Bangkok
  • Coverage on popular islands (Koh Samui, Phuket, Koh Phangan) is generally strong
  • Remote northern hill tribe areas and jungle treks may lose signal
  • Thai eSIM plans are very affordable - often under $3/GB
  • Download offline maps for island hopping and rural Chiang Rai province

Before you fly: a 6-step checklist
The mistakes that cost travelers in Thailand are almost always procedural, not which-eSIM-did-you-buy. Here is the order of operations that works.
  1. 1

Buy and install at home on WiFi.

Installation is not the same as activation. You can install the Thailand eSIM days ahead and only switch it on after you land, which avoids burning days of validity in transit.

  2. 2

Screenshot your current APN before you swap.

If you ever need to switch back to your home line quickly, that screenshot saves a support call from a foreign airport.

  3. 3

    Decide on your dual-SIM strategy.

Keep your home line on for SMS-based bank logins, two-factor codes, and emergency calls. Set the travel eSIM as the data line only. Most modern phones can do both simultaneously.

  4. 4

Disable iMessage on the travel eSIM line.

Otherwise iMessage will try to re-activate against the new line on arrival and you will spend the first ten minutes troubleshooting it instead of finding the taxi rank.

  5. 5

    Download offline maps for Thailand.

Google Maps and Apple Maps both support offline regions. Pull them down on home WiFi so a flaky activation never leaves you without a route from the airport. Our offline maps guide walks through it step by step.

  6. 6

Activate at the airport, not before.

Once the validity timer starts it does not pause. A 15-day plan you turn on the morning of departure burns a full day of validity before you even land.

Pricing on this page is pulled live from our database and refreshed every four hours. Coverage notes are sourced from carrier roaming agreements and updated when carriers change partners.
